What the MID Server Actually Does

4 min read
On this page

In this lesson, you will learn:

  • What the MID Server does for Discovery
  • How it talks to the instance
  • What it needs to work

🔁 Quick look back: Last time: Running the Pre-Discovery Readiness Check. You learned how SNWR passed the readiness check at gate 3.

1 The Problem: ServiceNow Can’t Reach Inside SNWR’s Network

The snwr instance runs in the cloud. SNWR’s servers sit behind firewalls. So:

  • The instance can’t connect to 10.10.10.21 directly.
  • SNWR won’t open inbound ports from the internet.

🎯 The problem: ServiceNow can’t reach inside SNWR’s network by itself.

👉 The fix: A MID Server runs inside SNWR’s network and does the work for the instance.

Flow: instance, ECC queue, MID Server, targets.
Figure 1. What snwr-mid-mum-01 does for the snwr instance.

2 The MID Server’s job

  • It asks the instance for work over outbound HTTPS.
  • It runs Discovery jobs against targets inside the network.
  • It uses the credentials to log in.
  • It sends results back to the instance.

💡 Good to know: Need a refresher? See Fundamentals › Integration Basics › MID Server Basics and AppDev › Integrations › MID Server for the basics.

3 What it needs

  • A host inside the network, close to its targets.
  • Outbound HTTPS to the instance.
  • A MID user on the instance with the MID Server role.
  • Network access to its targets.

⭐ Remember: A MID Server belongs to one instance. snwrdev and snwr each need their own.

4 Project Clear View: How We Implemented It

📍 Situation: The Mumbai MID hosts are ready. Hana’s team asks what the MID Server really does.

🧭 Decision: Explain its job using snwr-mid-mum-01, before installing it.

🛠️ Steps we took:

  1. Drew the path from the snwr instance to snwr-mid-mum-01 to snwr-mail-01.
  2. Showed that the only internet traffic is outbound HTTPS.
  3. Listed what the host needs.
  4. Confirmed Priya’s hosts meet each need.

✅ What we verified:

  • Hana’s team can explain the MID Server’s job.
  • The hosts meet every need.

📁 Evidence: MID Server notes for the runbook.

5 Quick recap

  • The MID Server runs inside the client’s network.
  • It asks the instance for work over outbound HTTPS.
  • It uses credentials to reach targets and sends results back.
  • Each instance needs its own MID Servers.

6 Check yourself

Think of your answer first. Then tap to check.

1 Why does SNWR need a MID Server? Show answer

The cloud instance can’t reach inside SNWR’s network by itself.

2 Which direction does the MID Server connect? Show answer

Outbound, from the MID Server to the instance.

3 Can snwr-mid-mum-01 also serve snwrdev? Show answer

No. A MID Server belongs to one instance.

Nice work! You know what a MID Server really does. 🎉
