Requesting MID Server Hosts

4 min read
On this page

In this lesson, you will learn:

  • What a MID Server host request must say
  • SNWR’s host sizes
  • Common mistakes

πŸ” Quick look back: Last time: The Prerequisites Checklist. You learned the 14 prerequisites SNWR must provide before scanning.

1 The Problem: Vague Server Requests Get Vague Servers

On a past project, the request just said ‘one server for Discovery’. The team got:

  • A Linux host, when Windows was needed.
  • 2 GB of memory.
  • A host in the wrong network zone.

🎯 The problem: Vague server requests get the wrong servers.

πŸ‘‰ The fix: Write an exact host request: OS, size, zone, name and network access.

Table of requested MID Server hosts.
Figure 1. SNWR’s MID Server host request (PR-01 to PR-05).

2 What the request says

  • Host name and OS.
  • Size: SNWR asked for 4 vCPU, 8 GB memory and 80 GB disk.
  • Network zone and IP address.
  • Outbound HTTPS (443) to the ServiceNow instance.
  • A dedicated service account to run the MID Server.
  • Who patches it.

πŸ’‘ Good to know: Check ServiceNow’s current MID Server system requirements for your release. Plan above the minimum for busy MID Servers.

3 Common mistakes

  • Wrong OS for the targets.
  • Too little memory.
  • A host that can’t reach the instance.
  • A shared server that runs other apps.

4 Project Clear View: How We Implemented It

πŸ“ Situation: Design says five MID Server hosts.

🧭 Decision: Send Priya one exact request covering all five.

πŸ› οΈ Steps we took:

  1. Wrote one row per host: name, OS, size, zone, IP.
  2. Added outbound HTTPS and the service account.
  3. Asked for dedicated hosts, not shared ones.
  4. Agreed patching with Priya’s team.

βœ… What we verified:

  • Priya accepted the request without questions.
  • Hosts are due in week 4.

πŸ“ Evidence: PR-01 to PR-05 in the tracker.

5 Quick recap

  • Say OS, size, zone, name and access for each host.
  • Plan above the minimum requirements.
  • Use dedicated hosts.
  • Agree who patches them.

6 Check yourself

Think of your answer first. Then tap to check.

1 Name four things a host request must say. Show answer

Any four of: name, OS, size, zone, IP, outbound HTTPS, service account, who patches it.

2 Why Windows hosts for Mumbai and London? Show answer

They scan Windows servers, which needs a Windows MID Server.

3 Why a dedicated host? Show answer

Other apps compete for memory and add risk.

Nice work! SNWR’s MID Server hosts are requested. πŸŽ‰
