Discovery Behaviors and Functionality Definitions
On this page
In this lesson, you will learn:
- What a behavior is
- What functionality definitions do
- When SNWR uses a behavior
🔁 Quick look back: Last time: Guided Setup and Discovery Properties. You learned how guided setup and a few properties set up Discovery.
1 The Problem: The Wrong MID Server Runs Part of a Scan
A London scan used snwr-mid-lon-01 for scanning, but a Mumbai MID Server for some Windows work. So:
- Traffic crossed the WAN.
- Firewall rules didn’t allow it, and parts failed.
👉 The fix: Use a behavior to say which MID Servers do which work.

2 Behaviors in plain words
Key term: Behavior
A set of rules saying which MID Servers run which kinds of work in a schedule.
Key term: Functionality definition
One kind of work, such as SSH or WMI, and the MID Servers that do it.
A schedule can use a behavior instead of letting each step pick a MID Server.
3 When to use one
- Different protocols must use different MID Servers.
- A site must keep all work on its own MID Server.
- You need full control of which MID does what.
💡 Good to know: If auto-select already picks correctly, you may not need a behavior. Keep it simple.
4 Project Clear View: How We Implemented It
📍 Situation: Part of a London test used a Mumbai MID Server.
🧭 Decision: Create the ‘SNWR London’ behavior and use it in the London schedule.
🛠️ Steps we took:
- Created the behavior with one functionality per protocol.
- Pointed each to snwr-mid-lon-01.
- Set SNWR London Servers Nightly to use it.
- Reran the London test.
✅ What we verified:
- All London work ran on snwr-mid-lon-01.
- No traffic crossed the WAN.
📁 Evidence: The SNWR London behavior, listed in the migration matrix.
5 Quick recap
- A behavior says which MID Servers do which work.
- A functionality definition is one kind of work.
- Use behaviors when protocols or sites need specific MID Servers.
- Keep it simple if auto-select works.
6 Check yourself
Think of your answer first. Then tap to check.
1 What is a behavior? Show answer
A set of rules saying which MID Servers run which kinds of work in a schedule.
2 Why did SNWR need the London behavior? Show answer
Some London work ran on a Mumbai MID Server and crossed the WAN.
3 Do you always need a behavior? Show answer
No. If auto-select picks correctly, you may not need one.
Nice work! SNWR’s London scans stay in London. 🎉
