What Is Transported vs Recreated in Production
On this page
In this lesson, you will learn:
- What moves between instances
- What must be recreated
- Why the difference exists
π Quick look back: Last time: Building the Production Migration Matrix. You learned how the migration matrix lists how each item reaches production.
1 The Problem: Some Items Can’t Travel
Riya tried to put everything in one update set. But some items:
- Belong to one instance, like MID Servers.
- Are secrets, like credentials.
- Differ by instance, like ranges.
π The fix: Know what moves and what’s rebuilt, and rehearse on snwrstage.

2 Why
- A MID Server serves one instance.
- Credentials are secrets; production values differ.
- Dev and test scan small ranges; production scans everything.
π‘ Good to know: Need a refresher? See Fundamentals βΊ Update Sets for how update sets work.
3 Rehearsing
Move the update sets to snwrstage and set up its instance-specific items. This shows gaps before production.
4 Project Clear View: How We Implemented It
π Situation: Riya wanted to understand what moves.
π§ Decision: Split the matrix into moved and rebuilt, then rehearse on snwrstage.
π οΈ Steps we took:
- Marked each row as moved or rebuilt.
- Moved the update sets to snwrstage.
- Checked every moved item arrived.
- Found one property left out, and added it.
β What we verified:
- The rehearsal found one gap, now fixed.
- The final update sets are ready for snwr.
π Evidence: Rehearsal notes and the final update sets.
5 Quick recap
- Patterns, classifiers and rules move in update sets.
- MID Servers, credentials and most schedules are rebuilt.
- Rehearse on staging to find gaps.
- Keep the matrix up to date.
6 Check yourself
Think of your answer first. Then tap to check.
1 Why are credentials rebuilt, not moved? Show answer
They’re secrets, and production values differ.
2 What did the rehearsal find? Show answer
One property that was left out of the update set.
3 Where was the rehearsal? Show answer
snwrstage.
Nice work! You know what moves and what’s rebuilt. π
