Comparing the Pilot with the Client’s Known Inventory

4 min read
On this page

In this lesson, you will learn:

  • Why compare with the client’s list
  • How to compare
  • What differences mean

🔁 Quick look back: Last time: Running the First Controlled Subnet Pilot. You learned how the 30-server pilot ran on snwrtest.

1 The Problem: Discovery and the Spreadsheet Disagree

Discovery found 30 addresses in the pilot. The spreadsheet lists 27 servers in that range. So:

  • Which is right?
  • Are the extra ones real?

🎯 The problem: Discovery and the spreadsheet disagree.

👉 The fix: Compare line by line, and find the reason for each difference.

Table of comparison results.
Figure 1. Pilot compared with snwr-server-list.xlsx.

2 How to compare

  1. Export the pilot results.
  2. Match by name, then by IP.
  3. Sort into: in both, only in the list, only in Discovery.
  4. Ask the owner about each difference.

3 What differences mean

Difference Usual reason
Only in the list Retired, renamed or unreachable
Only in Discovery New or forgotten server

💡 Good to know: Differences are good news. They show value the client didn’t have before.

4 Project Clear View: How We Implemented It

📍 Situation: The pilot and the spreadsheet didn’t match.

🧭 Decision: Compare line by line with Priya.

🛠️ Steps we took:

  1. Exported the pilot results.
  2. Matched with the spreadsheet by name and IP.
  3. Priya confirmed one server was retired last year.
  4. The three new ones were test servers nobody had listed.

✅ What we verified:

  • Every difference has a reason.
  • Priya added owners for the three new servers.

📁 Evidence: The pilot comparison, shared in the pilot review.

5 Quick recap

  • Compare pilot results with the client’s list.
  • Match by name, then IP.
  • Sort into in both, only in list, only in Discovery.
  • Every difference needs a reason.

6 Check yourself

Think of your answer first. Then tap to check.
