Designing the Identification Section
On this page
In this lesson, you will learn:
- What the identification section must do
- How to find the app reliably
- The archiver’s section
π Quick look back: Last time: Deciding Between an Extension and a Custom Pattern. You learned when to extend a pattern and when to build a new one.
1 The Problem: The Pattern Must Recognise the Archiver Reliably
The archiver runs on snwr-mail-02. The pattern must recognise it every night. But:
- Its process name changed once already.
- Other processes have similar names.
π The fix: Design the identification section around stable facts: process, path and port.

2 Design rules
- Match on more than one fact, such as process and path.
- Allow for small name changes.
- Fill the fields your identification rule needs, like install path.
π‘ Good to know: Your identification rule and this section must agree. If the rule matches on install path, the section must fill it.
3 The archiver’s section
- Find the process whose name starts with snwr-archiver.
- Check it runs from /opt/snwr-archiver.
- Check port 8465 is listening.
- Fill the name and install path.
4 Project Clear View: How We Implemented It
π Situation: The archiver’s process name had already changed once.
π§ Decision: Identify it by process, path and port together.
π οΈ Steps we took:
- Created the application pattern on snwrdev.
- Added the identification section with three checks.
- Filled name and install path for the identification rule.
- Tested against the lab copy on snwrdev.
β What we verified:
- The archiver is recognised under both process names.
- Other processes don’t match.
π Evidence: The identification section, part of the archiver pattern.
5 Quick recap
- Identify apps by several stable facts.
- Allow for small name changes.
- Fill the fields your identification rule uses.
- Test that other processes don’t match.
6 Check yourself
Think of your answer first. Then tap to check.
1 Why match on process, path and port? Show answer
Several facts are more reliable than one, especially if the name changes.
2 Which path does the archiver run from? Show answer
/opt/snwr-archiver.
3 Why fill the install path? Show answer
The identification rule matches on it.
Nice work! The pattern can recognise the archiver. π
