Identification and Connection Sections

4 min read
On this page

In this lesson, you will learn:

  • What an identification section does
  • What a connection section does
  • How they appear in the PostgreSQL pattern

πŸ” Quick look back: Last time: Pattern Designer Tour. You learned a tour of Pattern Designer using the Linux Server pattern.

1 The Problem: An App Must Be Named and Linked

For PostgreSQL on snwr-db-01, Discovery must answer two questions:

  • What is this, exactly?
  • What does it talk to?

🎯 The problem: An application must be both identified and linked to what it uses.

πŸ‘‰ The fix: Patterns split this into identification sections and connection sections.

Compare identification and connection sections.
Figure 1. The two main sections of an application pattern.

2 The sections

Key term: Identification section

Steps that recognise the app and fill its CI.

Key term: Connection section

Steps that find what the app connects to, such as a database or another server.

3 How they’re used

Horizontal discovery always uses identification sections. Connection sections matter most for Service Mapping, but can also add useful links.

πŸ’‘ Good to know: Infrastructure patterns usually have just identification sections.

4 Project Clear View: How We Implemented It

πŸ“ Situation: The archiver pattern will need both kinds of section.

🧭 Decision: Study them in the PostgreSQL pattern first.

πŸ› οΈ Steps we took:

  1. Opened the PostgreSQL pattern on snwrdev.
  2. Read the identification section’s steps.
  3. Read a connection section.
  4. Sketched the same two sections for the archiver.

βœ… What we verified:

  • The archiver sketch has one identification and one connection section.
  • Hana agreed the design.

πŸ“ Evidence: The archiver pattern sketch, used in Custom Patterns.

5 Quick recap

  • Identification sections recognise the app and fill its CI.
  • Connection sections find what it talks to.
  • Horizontal discovery always uses identification.
  • Infrastructure patterns usually have identification only.

6 Check yourself

Think of your answer first. Then tap to check.

1 What does an identification section do? Show answer

Recognises the app and fills its CI.

2 What does a connection section find? Show answer

What the app connects to, like a database.

3 Which product relies most on connection sections? Show answer

Service Mapping.

Nice work! You know how patterns identify and link apps. πŸŽ‰
