Cloud Resources in the CMDB
On this page
In this lesson, you will learn:
- Which cloud CIs are created
- How they relate
- What to check
π Quick look back: Last time: Cloud Discovery Schedules. You learned how SNWR AWS Daily was scheduled.
1 The Problem: Cloud CIs Look Different
After the first cloud scan, Hana saw new kinds of CI. She asked:
- ‘What’s a logical datacenter?’
- ‘Why is the EC2 instance separate from the server?’
π The fix: Learn the main cloud CIs and how they link.

2 The main CIs
Key term: Logical datacenter
A cloud region, treated like a datacenter.
Key term: Virtual machine instance
The cloud’s record of a VM, like an EC2 instance.
3 How they relate
The account contains the region, the region contains networks and instances. Each instance can link to a server CI found by the IP scan.
4 Project Clear View: How We Implemented It
π Situation: Hana saw unfamiliar cloud CIs.
π§ Decision: Walk her through them and check the counts.
π οΈ Steps we took:
- Listed the cloud CIs from the first run.
- Compared counts with Kenji’s console: 8 EC2, 1 RDS, 1 EKS.
- Explained how they relate.
- Checked the account contains the region.
β What we verified:
- Counts match the console.
- Hana understands each CI type.
π Evidence: Cloud CI notes in the runbook.
5 Quick recap
- Cloud Discovery creates account, region, network, instance and service CIs.
- A region is a logical datacenter.
- Instances can link to server CIs.
- Check counts against the cloud console.
6 Check yourself
Think of your answer first. Then tap to check.
1 What is a logical datacenter? Show answer
A cloud region, treated like a datacenter.
2 How many EC2 instances did SNWR have? Show answer
Eight.
3 How do you check cloud counts? Show answer
Compare them with the cloud console.
Nice work! You can read SNWR’s cloud CIs. π
