Applications, IP Ranges and MID Capabilities
On this page
In this lesson, you will learn:
- What MID Server applications are
- How IP ranges tie a MID to targets
- What capabilities do
π Quick look back: Last time: Where to Place MID Servers in the Client Network. You learned how to place MID Servers close to what they scan.
1 The Problem: London Scans Cross the Slow WAN
After snwr-mid-lon-01 was installed, a test scan of London still went through Mumbai. Because:
- No MID Server was told it serves London.
- So ServiceNow picked any MID Server.
π The fix: Give each MID Server its applications, IP ranges and capabilities.

2 The three settings
Key term: Application
What the MID Server may be used for, such as Discovery.
Key term: IP range
The addresses this MID Server serves.
Key term: Capability
A skill the MID Server has, such as a protocol, or Nmap if installed.
When ServiceNow picks a MID Server automatically, it uses these settings.
3 SNWR’s settings
| MID Server | IP ranges |
|---|---|
| snwr-mid-mum-01/02 | 10.10.0.0/16, 172.16.5.0/28 |
| snwr-mid-lon-01 | 10.20.0.0/16 |
| snwr-mid-aws-01 | 10.50.0.0/16 |
4 Project Clear View: How We Implemented It
π Situation: A London test scan went through Mumbai.
π§ Decision: Give every MID Server its applications and IP ranges.
π οΈ Steps we took:
- Added the Discovery application to all MID Servers.
- Set IP ranges for each MID Server from the IP plan.
- Checked capabilities matched what each one does.
- Reran the London test scan.
β What we verified:
- The London scan now runs on snwr-mid-lon-01.
- Every MID Server has ranges that match the IP plan.
π Evidence: MID settings table in the runbook.
5 Quick recap
- Applications say what a MID Server may do.
- IP ranges say which targets it serves.
- Capabilities say what it can do.
- Automatic selection uses all three.
6 Check yourself
Think of your answer first. Then tap to check.
1 Why did London scans go through Mumbai? Show answer
No MID Server was set to serve London’s IP ranges.
2 What IP range does snwr-mid-lon-01 serve? Show answer
10.20.0.0/16.
3 Give an example of a capability. Show answer
A protocol such as SSH, WMI or SNMP, or Nmap if installed.
Nice work! Each SNWR MID Server knows its job. π
