CI Reclassification

In this lesson, you will learn:

  • What reclassification is
  • Upgrade, downgrade and switch
  • How to handle SNWR’s misclassed CIs

πŸ” Quick look back: Last time: Reconciliation and Data Source Precedence. You learned how reconciliation rules decide which source may update each field.

1 The Problem: A Firewall Saved as the Wrong Class

snwr-fw-01 was saved as plain Network Gear. Eleven servers were saved as Computer. When Discovery finds them:

  • It knows they’re a firewall and servers.
  • But the existing CIs are in the wrong class.

🎯 The problem: Some SNWR devices are saved in the wrong class.

πŸ‘‰ The fix: Understand reclassification, and decide whether IRE may move these CIs.

Three types of reclassification.
Figure 1. The three kinds of reclassification.

2 How it works

When Discovery reports a more exact class, IRE can move the CI to it. The CI keeps its sys_id, so incidents stay linked.

  • Upgrades are usually allowed.
  • Downgrades and switches are riskier. They may be blocked by default.
  • Settings control which ones IRE may do.

πŸ’‘ Good to know: Check the reclassification settings on your instance before the first scan. They can differ between releases.

3 Handling misclassed CIs

Option When
Let IRE upgrade them The new class is more specific. Usually safe.
Fix them by hand first A switch between siblings, or very important CIs.

4 Project Clear View: How We Implemented It

πŸ“ Situation: SNWR has 11 servers in Computer and a firewall in Network Gear.

🧭 Decision: Let IRE upgrade them during the pilot, and check the result.

πŸ› οΈ Steps we took:

  1. Checked the reclassification settings on snwrdev.
  2. Confirmed upgrades are allowed.
  3. Picked two misclassed servers for the pilot range.
  4. Planned to check that their incidents stay linked after the move.

βœ… What we verified:

  • Upgrades are allowed on snwrdev and snwrtest.
  • The check is in the pilot test list.

πŸ“ Evidence: Reclassification notes in the CMDB readiness report.

5 Quick recap

  • Reclassification moves a CI to a different class.
  • Upgrade goes more specific, downgrade more general, switch sideways.
  • The CI keeps its sys_id, so links stay.
  • Check the settings before scanning.

6 Check yourself

Think of your answer first. Then tap to check.

1 Network Gear to IP Firewall is which kind of reclassification? Show answer

An upgrade.

2 Does a reclassified CI lose its incidents? Show answer

No. It keeps its sys_id, so links stay.

3 Which kinds are riskier? Show answer

Downgrades and switches.

Nice work! You know how misclassed CIs get fixed. πŸŽ‰
