Ownership and Data Certification
On this page
In this lesson, you will learn:
- Why owners need checking
- What data certification is
- SNWR’s quarterly certification
π Quick look back: Last time: Stale CIs and Retirement Rules. You learned how unseen servers get a retire task.
1 The Problem: Discovery Can’t Know Who Owns a Server
Discovery fills technical fields. But the Service Desk routes incidents using the support group. And:
- Owners change when people move.
- Discovery never updates those fields.
π The fix: Ask owners to confirm their servers regularly through data certification.

2 Data certification
Key term: Data certification
A scheduled task that asks people to confirm or fix CI fields.
π‘ Good to know: Need a refresher? See ITSM Implementation βΊ CMDB Usage βΊ Support Groups and CI Ownership for why support groups matter.
3 Setting it up
- Pick the fields: owner and support group.
- Pick the CIs: servers.
- Pick who certifies, such as the server team leads.
- Set how often: quarterly.
4 Project Clear View: How We Implemented It
π Situation: Priya and Oliver own SNWR’s servers.
π§ Decision: Set up quarterly certification for owner and support group.
π οΈ Steps we took:
- Created a certification for server owner and support group.
- Assigned Mumbai to Priya and London to Oliver.
- Ran it once as a test.
- Priya fixed three wrong support groups.
β What we verified:
- Certification runs quarterly.
- Three support groups were corrected.
π Evidence: The certification, listed in the migration matrix.
5 Quick recap
- Discovery can’t know owners or support groups.
- Certification asks people to confirm fields.
- Pick fields, CIs, people and frequency.
- SNWR certifies servers quarterly.
