Running the Pre-Discovery Readiness Check

4 min read
On this page

In this lesson, you will learn:

  • What the readiness check covers
  • How to show evidence
  • What gate 3 needs

πŸ” Quick look back: Last time: Validating Pattern Commands and sudo Permissions. You learned how to test the sudo list against the pattern commands.

1 The Problem: Starting Scans Too Early Wastes Days

If you start scanning with gaps, failures pile up. Then:

  • You debug the network instead of Discovery.
  • The client loses confidence in the first results.

🎯 The problem: Starting scans too early wastes days.

πŸ‘‰ The fix: Run one readiness check with evidence for every item, and sign gate 3.

Checklist of readiness items.
Figure 1. The Clear View readiness check (gate 3).

2 What the check covers

  • Hosts built and patched.
  • Every port matrix row tested.
  • DNS checked.
  • Accounts created and tested.
  • sudo list tested.
  • Approvals and change in place.

3 Evidence

For each item, point to the evidence: a test log, a screenshot, or a signed approval. ‘Priya said so’ isn’t evidence.

⭐ Remember: Gate 3 is the client’s promise that the environment is ready. Take it seriously.

4 Project Clear View: How We Implemented It

πŸ“ Situation: Week 5. Mumbai items are done. London is moved to week 6.

🧭 Decision: Run the readiness check for Mumbai, with evidence, and sign gate 3.

πŸ› οΈ Steps we took:

  1. Walked through every item with Hana.
  2. Showed the test logs for ports, DNS and sudo.
  3. Confirmed the first-scan change was approved by Mei’s CAB.
  4. Noted London as a separate check in week 6.

βœ… What we verified:

  • Every Mumbai item has evidence.
  • Hana signed gate 3.

πŸ“ Evidence: The signed readiness check (gate 3).

5 Quick recap

  • Check hosts, ports, DNS, accounts, commands and approvals before scanning.
  • Every item needs evidence.
  • Starting early with gaps wastes days.
  • Gate 3 says the environment is ready.

6 Check yourself

Think of your answer first. Then tap to check.

1 Name four items on the readiness check. Show answer

Any four of: hosts, ports, DNS, accounts, sudo commands, approvals.

2 Is ‘Priya said so’ evidence? Show answer

No. Evidence is a test log, screenshot or signed approval.

3 What happened to London at gate 3? Show answer

It was checked separately in week 6.

Nice work! SNWR is ready for the first scan. πŸŽ‰
