What CSDM Data Does SNWR’s Go-Live Need?

On this page

In this lesson, you will learn:

  • Why you don’t load the whole CMDB first
  • What SNWR’s ITSM uses on day one
  • What can wait
  • Service portfolio versus enterprise portfolio

🔁 Quick look back: Last time: Using Services in Incident and Change. You learned how SNWR makes Service and Service offering required on incidents, filled from the CI.

1 “We can’t go live until the CMDB is perfect”

Hana wants every server, laptop and app in the CMDB before go-live.

  • That’s 4,000 CIs.
  • It would take six months.
  • Go-live is in eight weeks.

🎯 The problem: Waiting for a perfect CMDB delays everything, and much of it wouldn’t be used yet.

👉 The fix: load only what ITSM will use on day one, and grow it after.

2 What ITSM uses on day one

Key term: CSDM

The Common Service Data Model: ServiceNow’s guide for how services and CIs fit together.

Key term: Application service

A running app that supports a service, like the SNWR Email system on its servers.

SNWR's day-one CSDM data. Needed on day one: SNWR Email and SNWR Network services, their offerings SNWR Email - Standard and SNWR Network - VPN, and the CIs behind them: snwr-mail-01, snwr-mail-02 and snwr-vpn-gw-01. Can wait: every laptop, every app not in the go-live scope, and full discovery. A note says SNWR's needs come from what its incidents, changes and requests will point to.
Figure 1. Load what records will point to. Grow the rest later.

3 Two different branches

CSDM branch What it’s for
Service portfolio (Sell / Consume) Services and offerings people use. ITSM needs this.
Enterprise portfolio (Design) Business apps and their owners. Useful later, not needed for go-live.

⭐ Remember: There is no single “minimum CMDB”. Ask: what will our records point to on day one?

4 Quick recap

  • Don’t wait for a perfect CMDB
  • Load what incidents, changes and requests will point to
  • SNWR day one: two services, two offerings, three CIs
  • Laptops and full discovery can wait
  • Service portfolio and enterprise portfolio are different branches

5 Check yourself

Think of your answer first. Then tap to check.

1 Why not load all 4,000 CIs first? Show answer

It would take months, and much wouldn’t be used yet.

2 Name one CI SNWR needs on day one. Show answer

snwr-mail-01, snwr-mail-02 or snwr-vpn-gw-01.

3 Is there one minimum CMDB for every company? Show answer

No. It depends on what your records will point to.

4 Which CSDM branch does ITSM need first? Show answer

The service portfolio: services and offerings.

Nice work! You know what CMDB data SNWR needs first. 🎉
