The CIS-ITSM Exam and How This Path Maps to It
On this page
In this lesson, you will learn:
- What the CIS-ITSM certification is
- What the exam looks like
- What you need before you can book it
- The six exam domains, and where this course teaches each one
- How to keep your certification current
🔁 Quick look back: In The SNWR Rollout Plan: snwrdev to snwr, you learned that you build only in snwrdev and promote work forward. Five gates keep the project on track.
1 “I studied hard, and still failed”
Riya has a friend, Karan, who tried the CIS-ITSM exam last year. Here’s what went wrong. 😟
- He spent three weeks on Service Portfolio. It turned out to be one of the smallest parts of the exam.
- He read the docs, but never set anything up himself. The questions were about real situations.
- He didn’t know about a new required exam, so he couldn’t even book a date at first.
👉 The fix: know the exam format and the rules. Then follow a clear map from each exam domain to the chapters that teach it. That’s this lesson.
2 What is CIS-ITSM?
Key term: CIS-ITSM
Certified Implementation Specialist – IT Service Management. A ServiceNow certification that shows you can set up ITSM for a company.
Key term: Domain
One topic area of the exam, like Incident Management or Change Management.
Key term: Delta exam
A short yearly exam that keeps your certification current.
You already know the CSA exam from Fundamentals. CSA checks that you can run the platform. CIS-ITSM checks that you can implement ITSM. That’s exactly what this course teaches.
3 The exam at a glance
- 📝 60 questionsMultiple choice and multiple select
- ⏱️ 90 minutesAbout 1.5 minutes per question
- 🖥️ Pearson VUEOnline, or at a test center
| Question type | What it means |
|---|---|
| Multiple choice | Pick the one best answer. |
| Multiple select | Pick all the answers that are right. The question tells you how many. |
💡 Good to know: In 2026, a CIS exam costs 450 USD, and a retake costs 225 USD. Prices and rules can change, so check ServiceNow University before you book.
4 Before you can book

- Finish the required course. Since 2026, there are no exam vouchers. You unlock the exam by completing the ITSM course on ServiceNow University.
- Pass CIS – Data Foundations. This exam covers the CMDB and CSDM. Since late 2025, you need it for CIS-ITSM.
- Book the exam. Book it through ServiceNow University. You can take it online from home, or at a Pearson VUE test center.
⚠️ Heads up: ServiceNow changes these rules often. Always read the exam page on ServiceNow University before you plan your dates.
5 The six domains, and where you learn them
The exam has six domains. ServiceNow’s official practice test has 118 questions. The picture shows how many of those come from each domain.

| Domain | Chapters in this course |
|---|---|
| Incident Management | Incident Configuration, Incident Operations, Major Incidents |
| Problem Management | Problem Management |
| Change Management | Change Types, Change Risk, Change Approvals |
| Service Catalog and Request | Catalog Design, Request Fulfillment, Request Experience |
| Service Portfolio | Service Portfolio |
| CMDB | CMDB Usage |
📝 Note: These are practice-test numbers, not official exam weights. But they show where to spend your time: Incident, Change and Catalog come up the most.
The other chapters, like Foundation Data, AI Capabilities and ITSM Deployment, teach real implementation skills. The exam may not ask about all of them, but real projects need them.
6 How the questions think
- Most questions describe a situation, like “An agent at a company needs to…”. Then they ask what you should do.
- They test how ServiceNow works out of the box (the baseline), not one company’s custom setup.
- They reward doing it the ServiceNow way: configure first, customize last.
💡 Good to know: The best way to prepare is hands-on. Build each lab in this course on your PDI. Then questions feel like things you’ve already done.
📝 Note: The exam version can lag behind the newest ServiceNow release. This course uses the Australia release. A screen in the exam may look a little different. Trust how the feature works, not where the button is.
7 Keeping your certification current
Passing once isn’t the end. Each year, ServiceNow opens a short delta exam that covers what’s new. In 2026, the window ran from January 16 to April 16. Miss it, and your certification can expire.
⭐ Remember: Finish the course, pass CIS-DF, book the exam, pass it, then keep it current every year.
8 How to use this course for the exam
- Work through the chapters in order, and build every lab on your PDI.
- Spend extra time on Incident, Change and Catalog. They have the most questions.
- Finish with the CIS-ITSM Preparation chapter. It has domain reviews and a practice assessment.
- Then try ServiceNow’s official practice test.
