An ITSM Regression Pack with ATF

4 min read
On this page

In this lesson, you will learn:

  • What ATF is
  • What goes in SNWR’s pack
  • How a test is built from steps
  • When to run the pack

πŸ” Quick look back: Last time: UAT Test Scripts with Process Owners. You learned how to write a UAT script with clear steps and expected results, and run it with the process owner.

1 “The upgrade broke priority”

After an upgrade on another project, priority stopped setting itself.

  • Nobody re-tested incidents.
  • Agents set priority by hand for a week.
  • SLAs were wrong the whole time.

🎯 The problem: Re-testing by hand is slow, so it gets skipped.

πŸ‘‰ The fix: build a pack of automatic tests, and run it before every release and upgrade.

2 ATF and SNWR’s pack

Key term: Automated Test Framework (ATF)

A ServiceNow tool that runs tests for you, step by step, like a user would.

Key term: Test suite

A group of tests run together, like SNWR ITSM regression pack.

SNWR ITSM regression pack, a test suite with five tests. 1 Create an incident and check priority: impact 2, urgency 2 gives P3. 2 Check assignment: category Network, subcategory VPN goes to SNWR Network Support. 3 Resolve and close an incident. 4 Run a normal change from New to Closed. 5 Order a catalog item: SNWR Request a monitor through approval to an SCTASK.
Figure 1. Five key journeys, tested automatically.

3 How a test is built

  • A test is a list of steps, like Impersonate, Open a New Form, Set Field Values, Submit and Field Values Validation.
  • Catalog steps can open an item, set variables and order it.
  • Tests create their own data, and ATF rolls it back afterwards.

⚠️ Golden rule: Don’t run ATF on production. Keep it on snwrtest and snwrstage.

4 Let’s try it: build one test

  1. Open Automated Test Framework β€Ί Tests and create SNWR Incident priority.
  2. Add steps: Impersonate Abel Tuter, Open a New Form (Incident), Set Field Values (impact 2, urgency 2, caller Sam Lee).
  3. Add a Field Values Validation step: priority is 3 – Moderate. Then Submit.
  4. Run the test and read the results.
  5. Create a suite named SNWR ITSM regression pack and add the test.

5 Quick recap

  • ATF runs tests for you, like a user would
  • A test suite groups tests
  • SNWR’s pack: priority, assignment, resolve, change, catalog order
  • Tests are built from steps and roll back their data
  • Never run ATF on production

6 Check yourself

Think of your answer first. Then tap to check.

1 Impact 2 and urgency 2. What priority does the test expect? Show answer

P3.

2 When does SNWR run the pack? Show answer

Before every release and upgrade.

3 What happens to data a test creates? Show answer

ATF rolls it back.

4 Can you run ATF on snwr (production)? Show answer

No. Use snwrtest and snwrstage.

Nice work! SNWR’s key journeys now test themselves. πŸŽ‰
