Service Portfolio and CMDB Review

4 min read
On this page

In this lesson, you will learn:

  • Services, offerings and commitments
  • The portfolio states
  • How ITSM uses CIs
  • Where to go back if you’re unsure

🔁 Quick look back: Last time: Service Catalog and Request Review. You learned the key catalog and request facts, through Sam’s monitor and the new joiner order guide.

1 “Only 12 questions. Skip it?”

Service Portfolio and CMDB are only 12 of the 118 practice test questions.

  • It’s tempting to skip them.
  • But they’re easy marks if you know the words.
  • And the words sound alike.

🎯 The problem: Skipping small domains throws away easy marks.

👉 The fix: review them through one service and one CI.

2 One service, one CI

One service and one CI as a review. SNWR Email is a business service in Catalog state, owned by Arjun. Its offering SNWR Email - Standard promises 99.5% availability, and SNWR Mumbai HQ subscribes to it. The CI snwr-vpn-gw-01 supports SNWR Network - VPN, has support group SNWR Network Support, and is owned by Hana. Its dependency map shows the impact of CHG0030045.
Figure 1. SNWR Email and snwr-vpn-gw-01 cover most of it.

3 Key facts to know

Topic Remember
Business vs technology management service Employees use one; IT runs the other (older name: technical service)
Service offering One version of a service, with its own promise
Portfolio states Pipeline, Catalog, Retired
Service commitment A written promise, like availability
Subscription Links users, groups or locations to an offering
CI on records CI field, affected CIs, impacted services
Support group The team that fixes the CI; can route incidents

💡 Good to know: If a question asks what an employee would name, think business service.
